If you have this behavior – whenever you wake up in the morning, your eyes search while your fingers are ready to grab that electronic gadget, then it is a habit. Habit is an action that is difficult to break because it has become involuntary or robotic. Like smoking or drinking more than 2 cups of coffee a day, there are negative thoughts which pop up from mystical brains that tend to become unconscious negative patterns where many entrepreneurs are not aware of them consciously. Some habits are hard to change unless you make a conscious effort to change them. In today’s world, behavioral change is much needed for the hour for the entrepreneurs to become successful. The undeniable fact is that sometimes you think you know better, but still you continue to do the same things. Building good habits is hard. And your habits matter in your business.
Imagine you were raised in a family where there was a plenty of room to enjoy the freedom of being “just you”, and you have acquired a quite bit of knowledge through your very own experiences by gathering some good thoughts from books or from different resources or from your circumstances from childhood. Experiences can have a mix of good and bad, just like the taste of bitter gourd juice and honey. But, your personal experience plays a critical role the way you behave in every situation of your daily life. And your behaviour reflects on your entrepreneurial journey.
So, what are those five habits you may have gained through your own life experiences that you are reluctant to change them as an entrepreneur?
After going through a few situations in life, your brain has stored all those incidents sequentially for reference. Whenever someone talks about new ideas to venture or to give a try, you would not accept because it has become an unconscious habit for you not to become a resilient entrepreneur.
Action Plan – Think of someone who recently has suggested a new idea for your business vertical. It could be related to a client relationship or employee benefit and your obvious response from your mind was a loud “No.” Now relax and pick that idea to see if that is feasible. If yes, implement it and let us know the outcome of your positive behavioural change.
If your problem can be fixed, there is nothing to worry or amplify it to make it sound bigger. If it cannot be sorted out, then there is no point in worrying. It is prudent not to amplify the problems in your mind. When you are too busy talking out aloud only focusing on your problems, you are blocking your creative thinking that is needed to build your business.
Action Plan – Pick your current business problem “A” and do not magnify it big. Instead seek for the best solution that you can create to resolve that problem with your clear and focused mind.
Based on the previous information stored in your brain, you are so quick to draw a conclusion easily without even thinking broadly. Chances are you will fail to expand your own boundaries and rules because your own boundaries are easier to compromise on.
Action Plan – Go back to a business situation where you drew a quick conclusion and found out now that you made a mistake. Work on the same situation to see what if you could have changed that situation by not making that quick conclusion. By doing this way, you are directing your brain that next time you need time to think about before you draw conclusions easily.
You are quick to judge people or business clients based on the outward facts or outward appearance. For example, avoiding meeting people because of one particular incident that you heard from someone has hampered your mind, playing like a recorder whenever you get to hear or see that person’s name.
Action Plan – Create a schedule in your calendar to connect with that potential client or anyone of yours whom you had issues with to reinvent that wheel. And do not forget to meet new people so that you can analyze your own thought process to see how well you build relationships with the new people without judging them instantly.
Many entrepreneurs do not have the habit of “giving without expecting anything in return.” The more will come back to you if you focus generously giving to your business network and your customers. Sometimes giving rather than gaining will make you successful.
Action Plan – Giving doesn’t mean that you need to give a whooping amount of money to a charity. It just takes a little bit of your thought to appreciate someone who needs an appreciation from you. It is a simple action plan. Send an appreciation email to your client or customer and enjoy the simple feeling that wraps around your mind.
Though these habits are hard to break, it does not imply that one should stop trying to overcome these habits. Are you saying, “Well, it is who I am and I have a pretty good life right now.” The effort to defend something may make you feel better temporarily because the mind is capable of twisting things to make you more acceptable. The aforementioned habits gently encourage you to think twice before you refuse to concede any ground.
