Facebook Groups Gets Dropbox File-Sharing Option

Facebook users can now share their Dropbox-stored files from inside their Facebook groups, the cloud storage service announced on Wednesday.

The two companies have partnered up to roll out the new integration. Soon, all users will have the Dropbox option in their groups.

“Now you can share notes with your study group, add the latest game schedule to your basketball team’s group, or post a birthday video to your family’s group at lightning speed from wherever you are,” Dropbox engineer Chris Varenhorst wrote in a blog post.

To share a file, users can click on the “Add file” button at the top of the group page and Dropbox will pop up as an option. Group members can like, share or comment on the files and any edits made to a file are automatically updated via the cloud.

When asked if any other Facebook features down the line, Dropbox responded with a statement from Ilya Fushman, head of corporate development: “We’re really excited to see this launch and are always looking for new ways to make sharing and collaboration better.”

While millions of potentially new users is clearly a plus for Dropbox, it’s an interesting move for Facebook. The social network already has a group file sharing feature, one that was rolled out in May. The new feature gives Facebook users yet another reason to not leave the network. Why go off the site to access and share your files when the option is right in front of you?

Facebook isn’t sharing why its making the move, but did call Dropbox a “trusted partner.” “Our teams worked hard to create a simple and accessible solution that allows users to instantly upload and discuss files of all types and sizes,” a Facebook spokesperson said.
